TNNLS Requests Education Department to Create Awareness of CLAT among plus Two Students

(Jan 19, 2018): The online application process for CLAT 2018 has been initiated from January 1st, 2018. The candidates can fill the application form and select the NLUs in order of preference till March 31st, 2018. Bringing awareness to the students who have recently passed plus two about the exam is one issue that has been emphasized regularly by the TNNLS.

It has placed significant pressure on the Chief Educational Officers of all the districts to impart information regarding admission to 50% seats for B.A., LL.B and B.Com.,LL.B through CLAT, both of which are 5 year programs which can accommodate 55 students each in order to work at optimum capacity.

Check the official CLAT notification here

Previously, candidates have missed out on the opportunity because of insufficient information about the admission process. Last year, it was conducted by Chanakya National Law University, Patna and due to some changes in the dates; candidates were not able to be a part of the admission process.

Many a times, parents believed that scoring high marks in plus two would be enough for their young one to get admission in TNNLS, which is not the case. The law school admits candidates purely on the basis of merit in CLAT which is conducted by any one of the 18 member National Law Schools. There are many lessons learned from the carelessness of the past years and those mistakes must be eliminated by employing new initiatives for informing about the admission process.

The Vice Chancellor of TNNLS, Prof. Kamala Sankaran stated that “new courses are in line for professionalizing the scope of legal education and there will be specialty courses offered by visiting faculties to improve the candidate’s participation in education.”

Started under the Tamil Nadu National Law School Act of 2012, the residential university aims to provide legal education that matches international standards with a campus spread out in an area of 25 acres. The government of Tamil Nadu provided INR 100 crore of funding to bring the university into inception. Its students have actively been a part of various moot court competitions, seminars, conferences and extra-curricular activities all over the country and have displayed their enthusiasm through rigorous hard work and energetic performances.

Admissions to the university requires minimum 50% aggregate marks in plus two thereby debunking the myth of candidates that a good score can give them an entry pass to legal education at this university. As per 2017 rules, there is no age limit set for appearing in CLAT 2018 which has set a different age group of aspiring lawyers in motion. TNNLS educates students to their maximum capacity by setting internships for them starting from the first year. These are compulsory programs with NGO’s that give the students an insight into the social side of the legal framework.

In the second year of their course, the students are sent to learn from government agencies, judges, private institutions, law firms as interns and practice what is being taught to them. The third year of their training involves interning with trial court/subordinate judiciary to strengthen their hand on practical affairs.

In the fourth year, they collaborate with a law firm/Appellate court, and the fifth years sees the same structure as the second year where the go back as interns with agencies and private institutions. The amount of practical knowledge that is provided gives them an upper hand over other students pursuing law and allows them to stand apart as distinct law professionals in their field.

In CLAT 2017, several mistakes occurred in the form erroneous questions and a mess that was created by circulating the wrong answer key after the exams. These mislead a lot of students whose scores were mismatched with the actual results that were to be declared. This year, TNNLS has taken several initiative sin order to ensure that the application process if hassle free and the students are not misguided. This year with the help of state authorities, TNNLS requests to aware the students and address the concerns that were raised in the last year’s exam.

With experiences and corrections made from last year, this year CLAT is conducted by National University of Advanced University Studies for BA LLB, BCom LLB, BSc LLB, BBA LLB, BSW LLB courses with a total intake of around 2164 seats. The 2 hour exam will comprise of 200 multiple choice question with 5 sections including English, General Knowledge, Mathematics, Legal Aptitude and Reasoning. The cutoff for the exams vary from university to university and went to the highest of 1180 for Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University, Vishakhapatnam and as low as 59 for National Law School of India University, Bangalore.

TNNLS has strongly pressurized the officials to spread more awareness about the details of the examination with proper focus on application process, changes in exam dates and eligibility criteria for the same. The information regarding CLAT shall be provided on online portals of universities and offline methods shall also be employed in order to reach the candidates in remote areas with limited internet connectivity.

The future of legal education depends on the young generation of lawyers who are well equipped to exercise their knowledge in this field. This request of TNNLS can act as a turning point for several candidates who have been depraved of such opportunities in the past due to insufficient information.

The end date for online registrations is 31st March, 2018 and the admit cards will be issued on April 20th. Following the pattern of previous years, the exam will be conducted on May 13th, 2018 and the answer key will be published on May 15th. The results will be announced on May 31st from whence the candidates can be part of the counseling process. This year, more focus will be laid on getting the system to comply with the student’s needs and how more awareness can be spread for admissions in law colleges including TNNLS.
