Janata Dal(U) ends UDF sojourn, reaches LDF

(Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 11, 2018):Putting an end to all speculations, M P Veerendra Kumar - led JDU u unit in the state has decided to join hands with the LDF. The state secretariat meeting of the party on Thursday gave nod for the party to sever ties with the UDF.

The party will end its nine-year truck with the UDF and will revive its old name Socialist Janata (Democratic) to cooperate with the CPM-led front. The state council meet that will be held in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday will finalize the new political stand of the party and formally announce it.
After the secretariat meeting, party secretary general Varghese George said that the change in the political stand was discussed in the meeting and there was a unanimous decision to join the new alliance. All the 14 district presidents and state secretariat members supported the decision, he added.

In the meeting, state president of the party M P Veerendra Kumar said that the time has come to take a decision on joining hands with the LDF and it is the most appropriate time now. The leaders who spoke in the meeting were of the opinion that it was a big loss for the party after joining the UDF.

In the last assembly election, all the seven candidates the party had fielded faced severe defeat under the UDF front. In the last Lok Sabha election also the party faced defeat in Palakkad.

It was when the CPM denied the Kozhikode Lok Sabha seat for the party in 2007 that the SJ(D) decided to switch front.
Veerendra Kumar had merged his party with the JD(U) later and he was given the Rajya Sabha seat by the UDF to pacify for the defeat he faced in Palakkad. However, with the JD(U) led by Nitish Kumar aligning with NDA, there was no choice for him but to resign his RS seat.

Welcoming the party secretariat decision, CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said, "The LDF has not closed the doors for them. But they are not coming with any conditions.".

However, the UDF leadership is irked since they are yet to be officially communicated by the JD(U) about this decision. "They have not informed anything on this till now and we are not aware on what grounds they had taken this decision," said KPCC president M M Hassan.
